Useful tips on essential oils to use this autumn
This time of the year it is rife for picking up horrible bugs, coughs and colds.
As an Aromatherapist I rely on many essential oils to help me and my family throughout the autumn and winter months. I am very aware of the amount of parabens and preservatives that can be present in off the counter products, I try an avoid these as much possible.
Here are a list of my favourite essential oils that I have tried and tested.
Eucalyptus– Good for colds, sinus congestion, cough and flu and it stimulates blood circulation and the immune system. It is antibacterial, antiviral and expectorant. Refreshes the mind.
Lemon- Good for colds, throat infections, fever, and flu and can stimulate the production of white blood cells, immune stimulant, diuretic, cleansing and uplifting for the mind.
Benzion-Antibacterial, antifungal; seals wounds from infection; counteracts inflammation; decreases gas, indigestion, and lung congestion; promotes circulation; and is an antioxidant and deodorant.
Rosemary– Good for poor circulation, fluid retention, muscle stimulant, bronchitis and flu improves concentration, antiseptic, antifungal, antiviral, general tonic.
Ginger – Very effective in helping to decrease mucus from the throat and lungs. Ginger tea is a great remedy for indigestion, stomach ache, dyspepsia, spasms, diarrhoea, flatulence and other stomach and bowel related problems.
Sandlewood – Anti-inflammatory and an expectorant. Particularly helps to provide relief from viral infections which can initially cause the coughing, cold, flu in an infection. It has also calming and relaxation properties.
Lavender – I could write pages on the benefits of this oil, it’s fantastic!
Relaxing and sleep inducing. A great remedy for aching muscles and joints when massaged or in a bath. Very effective with respiratory problems including throat infections, flu, cough, cold, asthma, sinus congestion, bronchitis, whooping cough, laryngitis, and tonsillitis.
I use only natural base oils for my blends such as grapeseed, avocado or sweet almond. At night when a cold and cough can be at its worst, I have my own blend of oils which I apply around the chest and throat area. It helps clear my nose and supresses my cough.
Eucalyptus – Lavender – Sandlewood. I mix 3 drops of each in 10mil of carrier oil shake well and apply.
It works for me!
These oils can all be used in baths, oil burners and in massage. Oils must be used with the correct dilutions and never to be used directly on to the skin or swallowed internally.
